Chapter Four

James

The iconic smell of chlorine fills the air around me. This ride is one of my absolute favorites because I thought all the animatronics were real pirates as a kid. The battle between ships always made me feel like I was in the middle of a real battle at sea, my imagination taking over and adding to the park’s magic. No matter how old I get or how many times I ride this ride, I feel like a little kid again.

Leah bounces on her toes, the excitement is clear on her face. I want to tease her but I hold back. Can I possibly flirt like a normal guy instead of annoying her to death? I take a deep breath, determined to try.

“You like this one then?” I ask, my hand instinctively going through my hair because I feel uncomfortable.

She turns and gives me one of her smiles that fills her face and brightens her eyes. “Oh, yes. As a little girl, I would pretend the ship battle was real and that I was a pirate going off to save my crew,” she slowly stops bouncing as she realizes that she revealed so much. A light pink fills her cheeks and I grin.

“Aren’t you a bit small for a fearsome pirate?” I clench my jaw, irritated with myself for teasing her. Again.

She narrows her eyes at me, without saying anything, but there’s just a hint of amusement in her eyes. I grin. Maybe teasing her just a bit isn’t the worst thing in the world.

“I could throw you over my shoulder and carry you away from the battle, no problem.”

She narrows her eyes at me. “Oh, you’d like that wouldn’t you?” she asks.

I lower my voice, “Yes,” I say, stepping closer to her.

Her eyes widen as she sputters trying to come up with something to say.

I laugh and nudge her forward in line, giving her a second to try to get the blush I like so much under control.

“Can I ask you something?” she says, twirling her hair around her fingers.

“Anything,” I say, and mean it.

“Why are you always teasing me?” she looks at me and then narrows her eyes. I remain quiet, unsure of what to tell her.

“I can see the gears working in your head to come up with something snarky. I was hoping for a real answer,” she sighs and turns around, clearly giving up on getting an answer.

Reaching out, I grab her elbow and turn her to face me again. With anyone else, I would brush the question off with a sarcastic remark. But with her blue eyes bright with hope and her little forehead’s worry lines crinkling up, I don’t want to be sarcastic. She’s both worried and hopeful and absolutely beautiful. I’ll tell her anything.

“My mom is a captain in the sheriff’s department. Police officers tend to not be super emotional or open with feelings so they show affection through teasing. I guess I picked it up from her.”

“Is that how she shows her love to you? Through teasing?”

I smile, “Yes.
